Back to School Night – Minimum Day

All parents are invited to Back to School Night on September 5, 2018 at 6:00 to 7:30 pm.  This is an orientation for parents only. You will meet the teachers and learn about the academic standards your children will be mastering this year. See you there! 

Childcare will be provided by YMCA,  $10 per child from 6:00 to 7:30pm (pasta dinner is included). Sign up now in the YMCA, space is limited. First come, first serve. Younger siblings are welcome as long as they are potty trained.

Walk and Roll

Walk and roll officially kicks off this Friday, August 31!  Remember to walk or roll to school every Friday to start earning your prizes!!!!

 

Picture Day

Picture Day is coming up on September 18!  We are looking for 3 volunteers to help from 8:10am-12:10pm.  You will check students’ appearance, pass out name cards or get kids from classrooms.  If you are able to help out during that time, please talk to Mrs. Dolan in the office or you can send her an email at bdolan@mvwsd.org.

ELAC Meeting

ELAC – English Learner Advisory Committee

All parents of English learners are invited to join us in our first ELAC meeting.  The purpose of the ELAC is to advise the principal and school staff on programs and services for English learners.

Please join us on Thursday, August 30 at 8:30 a.m. in the MUR.

 

Expiration of Free & Reduced Eligibility Status!

MVWSD uses an online application process for free or reduces price meals.  Just as in the past you will need to reapply annually.  Please apply online for the National School Lunch Program by going to www.EZMEALAPP.com

The 30-day grace period for last year’s eligibility status for Free & Reduced students expires at the end of September!  Unless students have submitted an application, they will be charged the full price for breakfast and lunch by the expiration date.  Please submit your applications online, please go to www.EZMEALApp.com

Morning Supervision

Morning supervision will begin at 7:30am on the blacktop.  Please do not drop off your student before 7:30 a.m.

 

School Site Council

We are actively seeking out members for the school site council for this year and we need parents to join in and have a voice.  I have included a brief description of the council and would love for as many of you to join in as possible.  We sent out a survey regarding time and day for our monthly meetings and per our survey results the meetings will be held on the first Monday of the month at 3:15 p.m.  Our first meeting will be held on Monday, September 10th.  Hope to see you there!

Purpose of meetings:  The school site council is a group of teachers, parents, and classified employees that works with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets.  Over the course of a year, a typical council might consider the goals of the school or district and then work with the principal to evaluate the school’s progress toward those goals.  We really appreciate the input of all members of our community including our parents.  It makes a cohesive partnership.

 

Absence and Tardy Policy

During the school year, if your child is going to be absent for any reason, please call Barbara Dolan 650-526-3520 ext. 0 or email her at bdolan@mvwsd.org

Excused absences are limited to illness, doctor/dentist appointments, and bereavement. All other absences including travel will be considered unexcused. Once you have accrued three unexcused absences or unexcused tardies over thirty minutes you should expect a truancy letter from the school district.

A tardy (arriving late to school) over 30 minutes without a doctor’s note or not due to illness is considered unexcused.  Once a student accrues five unexcused absences or tardies, parents will be contacted by a district liaison for an attendance meeting.

 

Medication Forms

If your child requires medication to be kept at school, please pick up medication release forms from the office during our first week of school and return ASAP (we cannot administer any medication without the form).  Please note that all medication, even over the counter ones, need a medication form signed by your doctor.

 

Visitors and Volunteers

Anyone coming on the school grounds after 8:15 a.m. must check in at the office.  You will sign the visitor/volunteer log and get a name badge to wear while on the campus.  This is for your child’s safety.  Also, in order to avoid interruptions of messages to the classroom, please send your child with everything they need for the day: homework, lunch, snack.  Also, please make sure that your children know who is picking them up when they come to school in the morning.  Students must be picked up on time. 

 

TB Test Required for regular parent volunteers!

State law requires that all people having close contact with students in schools must have verification of having passed a TB test.  If you volunteer at Landels School, please bring the results of your TB test to the school office.  The TB test is good for four years.

 

Bathrooms

For the safety and privacy of our students, the bathrooms on the corridors are for student use only.  Adults should not enter these bathrooms.

Please use the bathrooms located in the MUR. 

 

Safe Community: Parking Lot

For safety reasons, we would like to remind you of the following parking lot rules.

Following these rules will ensure everyone’s safety during morning student drop-off and afternoon pick-up.

Please do not use cell phones when dropping off or picking up your child.

Please do not use the bus lane to drop off students.

Do not park your car at the apartments across the street from Landels or along Dana Street in front of the school.  You may park in the neighborhood behind Landels – on Mercy St., Frances Way or Eldora Drive.

Please do not park or use the staff parking lot to drop off or pick up your child.

When entering the parking lot in the afternoon, please form two lines of cars.  You must stay in your car.

Please do not leave your car unattended during drop-off or pick-up, unless your car is in a parking space.

Please be SAFERESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE!

 

 

If your student is interested in a class, please have him/her sign up in the office.  If you would like to add the class to your calendar, please scan the 2-D bar (QR) code on the sign-up sheet after your student has signed up.

Use an interactive platform called "Scratch" to learn essential programming concepts such as variables, conditionals, and loops.

The Landels Enrichment Activities Program is a collection of after-school classes that give students a "hands-on" way to learn material beyond the standard curriculum.  Classes are free to Landels students.  2017-18 was another record year for the LEAP program as over 180 students participated in LEAP classes!

 

Back to school packet:

By now you should have received your Welcome Back Pack, which is full of essential information! Included you will find a PTA membership form, a gear form and an events waiver.  Please sign and return your waiver, which is needed for all PTA events including our upcoming Ice Cream Social, Movie Night and Walkathon, to the office! Also attached is a handy Magnetic Calendar with key dates for you to refer to throughout the school year. 

 

PTA Meeting:

If you weren’t able to make it to our first PTA meeting this morning, please join us next month!  If you are unable to make morning meetings, don't worry, we alternate between morning and evening meetings! We even provide free childcare and dinner for the children through the YMCA.  Our next evening meeting is at 6:00pm on Wednesday, September 26. We hope to see you there!

 

Ice Cream Social:

The PTA invites all Landels families and staff to our annual back-to-school Ice Cream Social on Friday, September 7th from 6:00-7:30pm

Come and enjoy this informal, FREE event on the Landels Blacktop!

The suggested donation for this event is one topping of your choice per family. Please send your topping to the school office in advance of the event, or simply bring it with you that night. Possibilities for toppings include chopped fruits, sprinkles, candies, chocolate chips, crumbled cookies, or syrup of any flavor.

Become a Living Classroom Docent!

Mountain View Whisman School District’s Living Classroom program inspires our students to value the natural world through garden-based education. We provide Kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms with hour-long lessons that correlate with current science, math, and social studies standards. Living Classroom uses a hands-on, inquiry approach to learning which ensures our lessons are effective AND fun!

This year we will teach over 500 lessons with the help of our volunteers. Becoming a docent is rewarding, enjoyable, and no prior teaching experience is required. MVLA Parent Education: Finding the Right Fit College at the Right Price

Spanish Interpreters Needed

The Mountain View Whisman School District is seeking interpreters for parent teacher conferences and translators for report card comments for the 2018-19 school year. Interpreters are needed for Spanish.  You must be available most weekday afternoons from 12:30-4:00pm between October 1 -12th for interpreting at conferences. Interpreters are needed year-round but specifically during conference weeks, possibly for IEP’s and on an as-needed basis.  Interpreters receive $24.00 per hour for their service and $29.00 for IEP’s. Interviews and testing to take place ASAP. Successful candidates will be processed in September and are expected to be available for work in October. MVEF and Aug. 30 Night at the Counter

Look for the Mountain View Educational Foundation (MVEF) at the District’s Back to School nights over the next two weeks. We have new posters on campus, along with an updated brochure. Donate to MVEF to enable us to continue funding arts, music, athletics and more at every school in the District! You can learn more at mvef.org

This Thursday, the 30th, you can dine out and support MVEF! The Counter restaurant is giving 15% of your bill back to MVEF. Just make sure to mention MVEF or show them the attached flyer!

 

 

Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Session - September 12th

You can change the life of a student!

Come learn about volunteer opportunities to Mentor high school students and Tutor students in grades K-8  in our Mountain View and Los Altos schools.

There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer.  You're welcome to just come and learn more about what we do. 

 

All volunteers must be high school graduates.
