Message from our principal:

Hello there Landels Families!

We are now in the middle of our first week and I have had the pleasure to visit most of our virtual classes.  It was exciting to see our students connecting with each other, sharing stories about their summer, and starting to learn how to use their Chromebooks and associated programs for distance learning.  Seeing our students online and adapting to this new virtual classroom makes me proud and happy to be part of this community!

Our amazing teachers and staff have worked really hard to open up the school year. We will continue to learn and grow together as a community to support our students and families with virtual learning.  As with any change, we know there will be struggles along the way.  Please use your 12 social-emotional tools and ask for help.  We can set up a meeting and discuss ways to support you and your family.  If we work as a team, we can create big and small successes along the way.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all our Landels staff and parents on a supportive and successful start to a new school year with Distance Learning!  We couldn’t do it without the support of all!

Tips For How To Do School At Home

  • Use the time timer app or purchase a time timer.  This way, your child can see the time that is passing and knows the session time is decreasing.

·       Use if… then… statements.  For example,

·       If you sit here and use your listening tool with the teacher, then I will get you some water to drink

·       If you finish two more sentences of writing, then you can take a 2 minute break of coloring (use time timer)

·       Set up a space in your house or yard so your child can use his or her quiet/safe place tool.  If you see your child escalating in unwelcomed behavior, ask them if they need to use their quiet/safe place tool for 2 minutes.  They can then go to their quiet/safe place. (use time timer)

Tip for accessing Zoom links:

If you can't see the zoom link for a particular session, try the following:

1.  Login to the Google Classroom for that class.

2.  Click on the "Classwork" button once they are in the Google Classroom.

3.  Click on the "Google Calendar" button at the top of the page.

4.  They should get a pop up window that asks them to "Add" the class to the calendar.

5.  Click "Add" and then the links should now show up on the calendar.

ELPAC Language Assessment

Mountain View is a beautifully diverse place where hundreds of languages are spoken. In some instances, children from households where a non-English language is spoken need additional help at school to become fluent in English. To make sure that we identify all such children, all public school districts in California are required to do an initial language assessment called the Initial ELPAC. (English Learner Performance Assessment of California).

A letter was sent out last week to all families with children who meet the criteria for the Initial ELPAC. The letter describes the rationale and details for the assessment and invites families to follow up with any questions they may have. Additionally, the following link is a helpful resource for parents/guardians to understand the test better and to help prepare their children.

A Parent Guide to Understanding ELPAC Initial English (also contains information about the Summative ELPAC, which is a similar test at the end of the school year.)

We understand that the beginning of the school year is a busy time, especially under these extraordinary circumstances. Based on current guidance from the California Department of Education, the Initial ELPAC this fall will be administered remotely. Details to come. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Claudia Navarrete via email at
cnavarrete@mvwsd.org.
