Hello Landels Families!
As stated in my previous newsletter, Landels Elementary sets goals every year in regards to academics and social-emotional behavior. We call this our site plan. After much data analysis, the following information shows our findings from our goals we set last year. Spoiler alert… we met and/or exceeded all our goals but one!! This is due to a lot of hard work from our entire Landels community team. We want to thank you for all your support!
2018-2019: Academic Achievement:
English Language Arts- Increase from 68% to 71% met/exceeded. Goal exceeded at 78%
Math- Increase from 64% to 68% met/exceeded. Goal exceeded at 69%
Reduce the number of “At-Risk” English Language Learners by at least 1 student as measured by California “At-Risk” criteria. Yes, we reduced the number of at risk LTEL students by 2.
Increase from 84% to 86% in the number of Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) students meeting or exceeding standards in ELA as measured by District Assessments (K2) and CAASPP (3-5). No, we decreased from 84% to 78%
Staff will collaboratively develop and implement instructional rounds as evidenced by norms, feedback forms, and logs. Staff observed in other classrooms and completed discussions around data afterwards.
We will increase our attendance rate to 97% as measured by school and attendance data and we will maintain zero suspensions. We had 96.64% attendance rate. We had zero suspensions.

New After-School Classes
There is a new after-school French class starting on November 9. Also, CSMA Chorus will be starting Oct. 10. Please see attached flyers.
Halloween Parade
Please join us on Thursday, October 31 at 8:15am for our Halloween Parade. Students will wear their costumes to school. Please keep in mind that costumes should be appropriate for school. This means no masks, weapons, or gore. If your student doesn't celebrate Halloween, we will provide an alternative activity. Please contact the office if you have any questions.
Back to School Night for Room 22
Join Room 22 for our Back to School Family night to celebrate our new classroom at Landels Elementary. We will share all the fun and exciting things our students get to learn every day, including the awesome New Motor and Sensory Room. Snacks and beverages will be provided! Please come celebrate this amazing program with us!

Open House - Right at School
Right at School, a before and after school care program, will be hosting an open house for current and prospective families on October 22 in the library. Living Classroom
Living Classroom lessons kicked off this month and students took to the garden! Kindergarteners explore the garden and learn how to become stewards of their environment, first grade students learn about the parts of a plant and plant seedlings, second graders will plant winter wheat to be harvested in the spring. According to Cornell University Research, “A primarily qualitative study presented in Australia showed that “school-based community gardens represent a significant opportunity to embed nutrition, physical activity and environmental sustainability into mainstream curricula.” Living Classroom provides fundamental opportunities for your child to learn standards-based curriculum while also developing a love of their environment! MV Parent U: Mental Health Basics
Learn the basics of mental health, including: definitions, coping with stress, when it is important to seek help, combating stigma, and how to get help in our county.
October 23, 6:30-8 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Graham MUR
A team of professionals from Palo Alto University will present foundational information about mental health and mental illness and how mental health challenges may look different in different people or cultures. Participants will engage in interactive dialogue about how to maintain good mental health, and how to combat stigma around mental illness. The training also discusses what to do when someone needs support or help.
Spanish interpretation and child care will be provided. Seating is limited and RSVPs are required for this event. Please click here to reserve your seat.

Are Vacations / Travel Excused Absences? Unfortunately, family vacations or travel is not excused – even when you inform your teacher or the office. This may come as a surprise for parents. Walkathon & Silent Auction
There are less than 2 weeks until Landels Elementary transforms into Candyland for the 2019 Walkathon and Silent Auction!

You can now preview the silent auction items at http://www.32auctions.com/Landels2019.
This week your child will bring home a Silent Auction packet with a list of the silent auction items and instructions on how to bid. Also, look around campus for posters of featured parties and experiences.
What you need to know about the Silent Auction
As in years past, the Silent Auction will coincide with the Walkathon on Friday, October 18th. While the students are walking, you will find the silent auction items displayed on tables on the blacktop. However, this year we’re trying something new: bidding will be ONLINE ONLY. All items are now displayed on our auction site (http://www.32auctions.com/Landels2019). You may preview the auction items now and you can start bidding at 3pm on Friday October 18th and can continue bidding until the auction ends on Monday October 21st at 3pm. This means that you will have the opportunity to bid for auction items remotely from your computer or mobile phone whether you are doing laps with your kids, stuck at work, out of town, or just don't get around to it until the weekend. The silent auction includes amazing items that were generously donated from organizations and individuals that support our Landels community. You’ll find a wide assortment of items including passes for camps and activities, tickets to performances and attractions, gift cards for local restaurants and merchants, books, and unique Landels experiences for kids, adults, and the whole family. How can I view the silent auction items?
Go to https://www.32auctions.com/Landels2019. Click on the green button “View All Items”.
How can I view just the parties? (or camps? or dining gift cards? or …)
You can filter for a particular category of items by clicking on the “All Items” link in the horizontal navigation.
When can I bid?
Bidding begins at 3pm on Friday October 18th and ends 3pm on Monday October 21st.
How do I bid?
You must create an account on https 32auctions.com. After logging into 32auctions.com, navigate to the page of the item you want to bid on and enter your bid.
I see an item at the silent auction table that I want to bid on, how can I find it online so I can bid?
Search for the name of the item on http://www.32auctions.com/Landels2019 to find the item and place a bid.

On the silent auction tables, all items will have a display sheet with a description of the item. In the bottom corner of the display sheet, there will be a QR code. Use your mobile phone to scan this QR code to be directed that item’s page in the browser. From there you can place a bid.
Can I make a proxy bid?
Yes.To make a proxy bid, select the “Proxy bid” button on the item page. By making a proxy bid, you specify the maximum you want to pay for an item and the system will automatically increase your bid to that amount if you are outbid.
How do I pay for and collect an item I have won?
After the auction ends, you will receive an email with a link to the invoice for the auction items you have won. ou may pay for your winning items online and then you can collect your items at the checkout times (see below). Alternatively, you can come to the checkout times and pay directly (in cash, check, or debit/credit card) and pick up your items at that time. (If it’s the same to you, we prefer you pay directly to avoid auction service fees)

Exciting Parent Education Event!
Decoding Dyslexia CA Please come join SELPA 1 CAC as we talk about what dyslexia is, the California Department of Education Dyslexia Guidelines and the importance of early identification. The presentation will include an abbreviated dyslexia simulation so participants can gain an understanding of what it is like to be dyslexic.
