Hello Landels Families!

Happy New Year and welcome to 2020!!  I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and did whatever they needed to rejuvenate.  I have heard winter break stories, both exciting and relaxing, from several members of our community.  I’m so glad!  I visited my huge family back in Chicago and my stories are both exciting and relaxing as well.  Also, it was between twenty and thirty degrees Fahrenheit most of the time I was there visiting.  That’s a bonus!

Author’s Visit Friday 1/17/2020

Next week on Friday, we are fortunate to have L. Kobie Wilkerson visit our school.

L. Kobie Wilkerson a.k.a L. Kobie Da Wiz is an award-winning author, poet, speaker, presenter, storyteller, edutainer, master teacher, and powerful transformer of schools and organizations. He ingeniously converts resistance to change into receptiveness for growth. He is a leading authority on helping schools and organizations cultivate relationships that support a healthy culture and climate. Kobie works with schools and organizations where it is his goal to see them systematically operate at their best, so they can effectively impact those they serve.

Your child will be receiving a flyer in their home folder (flyer also attached below) regarding pre-ordering books from the author.  If you decide to purchase a book(s), the book will be provided on the day of the author visit and will be signed by the author.  Please return all book orders to either your child’s teacher or the main office.

Message from Author

I’m super excited about being with you all. I am an author, but I’m also an educator and I don’t know what your previous author visits have been like, but this one is full of music, movement and memorable stories. Here is what you can expect in the L. Kobie Da Wiz experience.

Family Math Night at Landels (Thursday, January 16th)

We have received some feedback from families regarding needing support with our current math curriculum and strategies.  As educators, we completely understand the frustration at times with the different strategies and approaches we use to teach math in a conceptual way.  Therefore, we are holding a Family Math Night next week to address these issues.  We will be discussing our Eureka math curriculum, how it works and how to help at home.  We will be providing you with additional sites to support you at home.  Finally, we will be providing you with examples of the curriculum including how to read and use it at home and engaging math games to support deep understanding of the concepts.  Please join us in the Landels MUR at 6:00 p.m. and bring your child as they will benefit from this information, as well.

Abilities Awareness Week

The Learning Challenges Committee of the PTA Council is excited to bring Ability Awareness Week to Landels Elementary School the week of January 21st.

What is AAW?

  • A fun-filled and inspiring program designed to build empathy, understanding, and respect for the challenges of all students
  • Targets the whole school community
  • Yearly event integrated into the school culture

    What does it look like?

  • For 1st and 4th graders
    • Grade-specific activities designed to simulate different challenges (e.g. learning disabilities, ADD, physical disabilities, autism…)
    • For the first year, consider including 5th graders to catch up with same activities as 4th.
  • For all other grade levels
    • A short talk about the Rainbow of Abilities supported by an age-appropriate book reading and discussion
    • Fits well with the Project Cornerstone framework

Volunteers are needed to lead activities. Please let the office or your child’s teacher know if you can help. We’ll train you with everything you’ll need.
