Message from our principal:

Hello there Landels Families!

Our first day of school is approaching, Monday, August 17th, and although school will look, feel and sound different, we are excited and ready!  We will be starting the year with a plethora of training for our students and their families.  Some of the trainings will be live and some virtual.  Please feel free to use these training videos we created. We also will be focusing on team building and classroom community for the first week.  We planned some engaging activities so ask your child about his or her activities after each day.

We realize it is a different world virtually and need to be build a strong community so we can all get connected.  Therefore, we will be conducting a principal’s coffee once a week on Fridays for the first of month of school in order to have an open line of communication.  As I mentioned in my principal’s coffee earlier this week, please communicate with us via email or phone regarding your needs and struggles.  We are here to help and know that every family has a different situation.  I was raised in a big family of five kids and I can only imagine how that would have worked if this occurred when the five of us were in elementary school.

We are going to continue using our 12 social-emotional tools that we have in our toolbox.  A virtual training on how to use these at home will take place the third week of school.  A number of strategies to use your tools at home will be provided as well as a template to make your own lanyard of tools at home.

Every day at Landels Elementary we are committed to providing the best education for your child including the 21st century skills that our students need to be successful in life.  Some of these skills include critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, problem solving, and ethics.  We are excited to build these skills within our curriculum work in the classroom.  We cannot do the work without you, and each year we want to strengthen our home-school partnership.

Thanks for making our Landels community great!  Please review the following information carefully as it will help prepare you for the start of the new year!

Heidi Galassi

Attendance and Participation

Positive school outcomes are directly related to student attendance.  Like in physical school, students are expected to attend school daily. School starts at 8:15am and attendance will be taken during our regular morning meetings.  If you are absent or have an appointment, please know that you will need to follow our normal routine of reporting absences. You can report by calling our front office at 650-526-3520 or emailing our secretary by 8:30am at [email protected]. Similarly, school work and participation are not optional. Teachers will be completing participation grades daily. If your child is having difficulty with distance learning, our staff is available to support your family.

Gift Card Donation

Thank you to all of the families that have already donated a gift card!!

I hope you and your families are staying healthy during this unprecedented time    As you may know, there are several families in our district that need help to meet some basic needs.  The district is providing 2 meals a day M-F.  With kids being home from school, some families need more support for providing dinner and weekend meals.  There is a critical need for gift cards for these families to use for food.  If you are able, please consider donating a gift card to families in our own district.  Thanks so much for your help!  Let’s show these families how strong and supportive our Landels community really is!

Things to remember:

Gift cards should only be for Safeway and should be electronic.  (https://www.giftcardmall.com/e-gift-cards/safeway-egift-card

Electronic gift cards should be sent to our school and community engagement facilitator, Ms. Bea, at [email protected].

Families are welcome to donate more than 1 gift card.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Bea at [email protected].

School & Community Engagement Facilitator (SCEF)

As part of Landels’s plan, we have a School and Community Engagement Facilitator who will work to ensure that every student, family, and community member will feel valued and supported while working, learning, and partnering with our school. Here at Landels, Bea Claas is our School and Community Engagement Facilitator. She specifically focuses on students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged and/or English learners and works to organize parent education, provide translation services, and support positive student behavior. Bea’s overall goal is to increase parent education and engagement, support our PTA and ELAC parent groups, and form strong relationships with students and families. Childcare Registration is Open

During the time of COVID-19 and Distance Learning, MVWSD has partnered with providers Right at School, YMCA and Newton to provide on-campus, fee-based childcare with prioritization for the children of full-time essential workers. MVWSD students in grades TK-5 may enroll.

Please note that these are District partners, not MVWSD programs. You may contact the providers with specific questions about their programs and their health and safety protocols. Childcare subsidies may be available for parents through the state of California. Please ask Right at School, YMCA and Newton at time of registration.

Registration for these programs is open the week of August 3, 2020. For registration information, please click on https://www.mvwsd.org/childcare.

Free COVID testing at El Camino Healthcare

El Camino Healthcare District is offering free COVID-19 testing in Mountain View for anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in the healthcare district. You do not need to have insurance to get tested or provide proof of residency.

Note that this is NOT the antibody test. This is a test that tells you whether or not you are positive for COVID-19 on the day of the test. Tests are required to be scheduled in advance and are available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call 650-940-7022 to schedule your free test.
