Principal’s Message:
Hello Landels Families,
We are so excited to welcome students on campus tomorrow! Our teachers have spent the last week analyzing data, discussing various ways to support students’ social-emotional development and academic language acquisition, and setting up their classrooms. Now all we need are the students!
MVWSD is providing at-home COVID-19 testing kits for free to families and staff members so that you may test before returning to campus after a school break. A box containing one test will be sent home with each student on Wednesday so that you may test your student Wednesday evening. Please see this letter for what to do after testing. Thank you for participating in this safety measure to help ensure all of our students and staff stay healthy.

Just a reminder that indoor masks are required at school currently and while CDC data shows our community transmission level as “High." Please be sure to send your child to school in a well-fitting, high quality mask.

I’m happy to announce that all our tables have been placed under the solar panels to provide our students with much-needed shade while they eat. In addition, grades K, 1 and 2 will now be having snack and lunch together while grades 3, 4, and 5 will have their snack and lunch together. The schedule is as follows:

The parking lot tends to get very congested during dismissal, especially on minimum days. Please make sure you are being safe and only pick up students in the pick-up zone. There is enough room for 2 rows of cars to pick up students (highlighted in yellow) while the 3rd row in red drives exits. This only works if all cars pull up to the pick-up zone. Please also make sure you do not block the bike lane while pulling into the school on Dana St. Thank you for your cooperation.
Kinder parents are asked to park and walk up to the Kinder gate for dismissal (1:45pm on Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri and 12:10pm on Thurs). See slide 2.
Parents are allowed on campus in the morning before school starts and after school ends. To ensure student and staff safety, Landels is a closed campus between the hours of 8:10am and 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (8:10am-12:15pm on Thursday). We do encourage parents to drop students off at the front gate as this promotes student independence and has proven helpful with the transition to school. Please also make sure to stay clear of the after-school programs while on campus in the afternoon.

Reporting an Absence
School starts at 8:15am and attendance will be taken during class check-in. If your child is absent, please call the attendance line at 650-526-3520 x. 2 by 8:30am or email Stefani at [email protected]. If we do not know the reason for the absence, your child will be marked unexcused. If you are late or you have a dentist or doctor’s appointment during class time, please call the school office.
Childcare
MVWSD partners with providers Right at School and YMCA to provide on-campus, fee-based childcare. Registration for these programs is happening now. Please click here for information on sessions, cost and registration.
Free Snack and Lunch
School meals are free. MVWSD will continue to provide free meals to all students in the 2022-23 school year. Snack and lunches are available daily. Menus and nutritional analysis can be found on https://www.mvwsd.org/nutrition. There will be a vegetarian option each day. Students may bring their own self-contained lunches if desired.
Medication Forms
If your child requires medication to be kept at school, please pick up medication release forms from the office during our first week of school and return ASAP (we cannot administer any medication without the form). Please note that all medication, even over the counter ones, need a medication form signed by your doctor.
LEAP
The Landels Enrichment Activities Program (LEAP) is a collection of after-school enrichment classes taught by volunteers (e.g., parents, teachers, high-school/college students). Classes are usually one hour long after dismissal and cover a variety of topics such as art, science, sports, history, finance, etc.
We are currently planning to restart LEAP this year and are looking for volunteers to teach classes. If you have one spare hour and an activity that you think students will enjoy, please volunteer to run a LEAP class. Look for an announcement of the kick-off meeting after school starts. Puberty Talk for Fifth-Graders
MVWSD provides 5th grade students with a unit on human growth and development. The District continues to use the Puberty Talk program. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend parent information sessions about the online program and its content. Parents who cannot attend the August 31 preview can choose to attend a general preview session on September 1 at 5:30 pm. CAASPP scores are now available
CAASPP student (ELA, Math, CAA) score reports (from the Spring tests) are now available for parents on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. To learn more about how to understand your child’s CAASPP score report, go to the Starting Smarter website at https://www.ca.startingsmarter.org/. If you need assistance with logging on to the Powerschool Parent Portal, please contact your student’s school.
School meals are free, but fill out the EzSchool Meals application to help your school
MVWSD will continue to provide free meals to all students as part of California’s universal meal program. Breakfast and lunches are available daily.
We ask you to please Apply at EzSchool Meals to help MVWSD receive additional funding to support students who are in need, and may help your family.
This Free and Reduced Price Meals benefit is not limited to meals only. If your child is eligible for free and/or reduced-price meals, your family could get medical benefits, housing benefits, utilities benefits and more.
Students who qualify for free and/or reduced-price meals may be eligible for P-EBT cards. The more applications your school gathers at the start of each school year, the more additional funding it can receive for all kinds of programs that help children at your school.
If you are currently out of work, you may qualify and help your school, regardless of your financial situation. Apply at https://secure.ezmealapp.com/ or call your school office.
Notice: National School Lunch / School Breakfast Programs
The Mountain View Whisman School District today announced an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch / School Breakfast Programs for the 2022-23 school year. All students will be served lunch and breakfast at no charge at the following site: Mariano Castro Elementary School.
Additionally, in 2022-23, all students will be served lunch and breakfast at no charge through California’s Universal Meals Program (Universal Meals) at the following sites:

Volunteering Opportunities
PTA is looking to fill a few positions on our Board: Secretary, Parliamentarian, Auditor with some flexibility to swap roles if there is something else you’re interested in such as Financial Secretary or Historian. The commitment there is one Board meeting per month.
We are also looking for volunteers to take on roles to have immediate impact such as Room Parent, Room Parent Lead, Project Cornerstone, Walkathon, Book Fair, Make It Mondays (and Thursdays), and Playworks.
