Spirit Day Tomorrow: Cultural Heritage Day

Tomorrow is cultural heritage day. Students are encouraged to dress up in attire that represents their culture. I look forward to seeing our students’ diversity on display!

Women’s History Month

As you know, March is Women’s History Month. In order to celebrate this event, we are asking students to honor a woman that they admire. This person can be someone they know personally or someone who is famous that they admire. Students have several options:

  • Students can create an art piece that showcases a woman who is important to them. Art work can be visual (drawing, painting, sculpture, etc) or performance art (play, song, interpretive dance).
  • Students have the option to interview a woman they admire. Students can do a written interview or they can record the interview.
  • Students can also write an essay about an influential woman in their lives or in history.

Students who are interested, should submit their work by Friday, March 28. Digital submissions can be sent to the teacher or to Ms. Bea at [email protected]

PTA Appreciation

We are incredibly grateful for our PTA and all they do for our school community! From funding classroom resources for teachers to creating unforgettable experiences for students through field trips and assemblies, your impact is immeasurable. Your support brings structured play and problem-solving skills to recess through Playworks, and your dedication shines through in teacher and staff appreciation events throughout the year (including Chipotle for lunch last week!). To all the parents who give their time, energy, and donations—and who are a constant, positive presence on campus—thank you! Your generosity and commitment make a lasting difference, and we appreciate you more than words can express.

Thank you!

Counselors Corner

Dear Caregivers,

All students practiced resolving conflicts peacefully and becoming better problem solvers using a resolution model called STEP. Over two sessions, students learned about the elements of STEP, how to use it, and practiced with various examples of problems they may face socially. This approach aligns with previous instruction about how to show empathy to others and to be kind to themselves and others. Here is what STEP looks like in practice:

One key takeaway: When there is a problem, all involved students need to first be calm before starting to STEP. During SEL lessons, students have identified and practiced several calming strategies, including taking deep breaths, squeezing an imaginary orange, and taking a break. Once students are calm, they may begin to STEP. Here is some more detail about each step so you may also discuss and continue to practice them at home:

Say the problem: This includes thinking/asking about each person's point of view to better understand what the problem is. Then you state the problem respectfully, clearly, and without blame. For example, "Both people want to play with the same basketball." Some grades additionally learned how to say what you need using "Can I, please..., Could you, please..., Could we, please..."

Think of solutions: Thinking of multiple possible solutions helps to find one that you like best.

Explore the outcomes: When exploring outcomes, you can think of what might happen if you tried one of the solutions you came up with. Depending on the problem, consider if the outcome would be fair, would it be kind, would it solve the problem or make things worse?

Pick a solution: Pick the solution you like best and try it!

STEP is one way we are helping students resolve conflicts in a way that is safe, respectful, and responsible!

Best,

Ms. Walsh, School Counselor
