Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break! As we head into the final stretch of school, I want to thank you in advance for supporting your child with following routines and staying focused on school.

CAASPP Testing (Grades 3-5)

State testing begins in one week! Students have taken practice tests in class in order to get familiar with the CAASPP platform and procedures. They are ready to show what they know!

Below are some tips you may find useful to help prepare your child for the CAASPP assessment:

·       Explain to your child that it is important to do their best.

·       Provide positive reinforcement and encourage your child each day.

·       Keep the test in perspective. We want students to do their best, but please make sure they understand that it is only one test. Remind them that if they are doing their best, you are proud.

·       Make sure your child gets an ample, normal amount of sleep the night before the test.

·       Make sure to arrive on time each day.

·       Eat a healthy breakfast.

·       Keep a positive attitude about testing around your child. Remind them that this is a time to show what they know.

All students will test first thing in the morning (8:30am-10am). Please avoid scheduling appointments on the following days:

April 23rd-April 24th - Science Testing for 5th Only

April 29th-May 1st - ELA Testing for 3rd-5th

May 6th-May 8th - Math Testing for 3rd-5th

School Site Council (SSC)

We are beginning to recruit for next year’s School Site Council. Landels’ School Site Council is composed of five parents and five staff members.  The School Site Council helps develop goals and actions for Landels’ School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA or site plan in short). They must also approve the site plan before it goes to the board. If you are interested in running to be a member of our SSC, please complete this Self-Nomination Google Form by Friday, April 25th. More information about SSC can be found here

Thank you!

Summer Reading Books Needed!

We all know how important reading is to academic success. It is especially important for all of our students to keep up their reading over the summer. Do you have books that your family has outgrown and that you can donate to other families at Landels for summer reading? If so, please bring them to Ms. Bea in the office. She will make sure that they find a good home for the summer. All levels of books are needed. Thank you for your generosity.

Breakfast Celebration for our many volunteers!

We would like to thank you for your commitment, your dedication, and the time you spend supporting our students and our school.

Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 7:30 am in the MUR

ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE INVITED!

You don’t need an invitation to come to our celebration.

5th grade Green Team Recycling Update

Landels has started a plastic number 4 collection in the front office. We'll be collecting plastic grocery bags, bubble wrap, bread bags, and plastic shipping bags, please see the included graphic. Please make sure that all plastics are dry and free of food residue. We want to make sure that the plastics are not contaminated.

The goal is to reduce the amount of plastics that end up in our landfills and possibly bodies of water such as rivers. For more information please visit: https://nextrex.com/

Many thanks for your participation and Happy Earth Month!

MVWSD News

Apply now for Math focus groups on April 23

MVWSD is updating its math curriculum. As typical with our curriculum cycles, it’s time to review and improve our mathematics program to ensure all students have strong learning opportunities, including acceleration if desired.

MVWSD is launching a two-year process to update math curriculum based on the latest research and best practices for math education. Our math curriculum was last adopted in 2015, and math placement criteria hasn’t been updated since 2021-22. To make this process inclusive, we’re seeking input from students, staff, and parents on math curriculum, instruction, pathways, assessments, and placement.

MVWSD is seeking parent and community input through a virtual focus group on April 23 at 4:00 pm. If you are interested in joining this focus group, please click the link to apply no later than April 17.

Join us for a fun, family playdate. Everyone is welcome at Landels Holi, festival of colors.

When: Saturday, April 26th, from 2 - 4 pm

Where: Landels field. Note we will be on the far side of the field to not conflict with baseball games.

With: Yummy snacks, desserts, and drinks provided by the PTA and lots of colors to throw!

If you want to participate in tossing the color powder:

·       Please wear older clothes you do not mind getting dirty.

·       You might want to bring a towel or wipes for after.

·       If your kids are sensitive about things in their eyes, they can wear swim goggles or sunglasses so the powder does not get near their eyes.

·       You do not have to play with the colors! There will be no powders near the snack tables.

Please volunteer to help with set up, snacks, colors, or clean up here.

Campus Clean-Up Day: Sat, May 3rd, 11 - 12pm

Chess Tournament on Sun, May 4th, 10am - 4pm

The 22nd Annual MVWSD Chess Tournament, sponsored by district PTAs, is going to be held on Sunday, May 4th, from 10am - 4pm at Landels.  It is open to all elementary school and middle school students across the district.  Registration is free to all. Please come and enjoy a day of friendly competition and camaraderie! The registration form and instructions can be found at tinyurl.com/mvwsdchess, and the deadline for registration is May 1.

NEW for 2025: Is your child interested in playing chess but doesn't yet know all the rules and how to check-mate?  Are you an adult chess enthusiast who wants to play? The "For Fun" Division will be an organized set of matches held outdoors on the day of the tournament that anyone can participate in, regardless of age and skill level. You will be paired up with another player around your level. Student volunteers (alumni of past tournaments) will be on-hand to provide guidance and tips as needed. There's no need to register for the "For Fun" division, just come by on the day of the tournament and play!  Any questions can be sent to Angela Klittmark, tournament coordinator, at [email protected].

Teacher Appreciation Week: May 5th - 9th

Landels Yearbook

In the spirit of community, this year's school-wide Landels Yearbook is being significantly subsidized by PTA and available to everyone for only $10 each. To ensure your student gets a copy by the last week of school, order online today. You may also bring a check payable to "Landels PTA" or exact cash to the front office. If you need financial assistance, please contact the front office. Photos to be considered for the yearbook may be submitted to [email protected] (checked by volunteers Katarina and Alicia).

Book Fair Thank You

Thanks to everyone who shopped at the Linden Tree Book Fair! Because of your patronage as well as your donations to the PTA during the Walkathon, we were able to give every student a book to bring home. We sold over $7,000 (a portion of which was donated back to the PTA) and added new books to our school library and our classroom collections. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for reading, supporting the PTA and our local children's bookstore in the process!
