Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

Thank you to the Landels PTA for organizing breakfast and lunch for the staff this week. We appreciate the extra attention during P-T conference week! I’m so excited for one of my favorite events of the year - the Walkathon! See the PTA section below for more information on how you can participate and donate. Thank you in advance for your support and contributions!

Halloween

We will have an optional Halloween costume parade on October 31st at 8:20am (weather permitting). Students who would like to participate may come to school dressed in their costume. The students will parade on the blacktop. If you would like to attend, you can observe the parade from the designated area on the map. We will have an alternative space for any students that do not wish to participate.

Costumes

We encourage students to be creative with their costumes and have fun with the spirit of the holiday. All regular Landels dress code policies apply - please ensure costumes are appropriate and follow the guidelines below:

· No masks outside of the parade. Staff should be able to identify students.

· No pretend “prop” weapons such as guns, knives, or swords. We would like to promote costumes that align with our values of being kind and inclusive.

· Appropriateness – costumes cannot promote violence or be offensive or inappropriate in any way.

Students who wear costumes that do not conform to the costume guidelines listed above will need to call parents to bring a change of clothes.

Safety Month & Earthquake Drill

October is Safety Month in MVWSD. Don’t forget that the districtwide earthquake drill is next Tuesday, Oct 21. We have reviewed our procedures, and we are ready to practice. Parents, since students will be outside for approximately one hour, please plan to apply sunscreen to your child in the morning and have them bring a hat if they’re sun-sensitive. Please reassure your child that drills are our way of practicing for an emergency.

In the event of an emergency, like an earthquake, it’s possible that circumstances are not safe enough for us to release students as we typically do at the end of the school day. In an emergency, parents should not rush to school, but instead wait for updates from email, on mvwsd.org, social media and text/phone calls. So we know all students are accounted for, our schools will release students systematically to authorized adults when it’s safe. Please review our parent-student reunification procedures here. Students will be released at the front of the school (Dana St. side). Student reunification is in the grassy area by the Kindergarten gate.

Emergencies may never happen, but if they do, we’ll be better protected and more able to help ourselves and others. For more details about safety at school, please see https://www.mvwsd.org/safety.

Thank you!

Pieter Dolmans

UNITY DAY 10/22

Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011, is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a day when we can come together to send a visible message of building commUNITY through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing support for students who have been bullied and for bullying prevention.

Winter Clothes Donations

It's finally time to get the warm clothes out of the closet!  If you find items that are too small for your kids, or you just don't want them anymore, please bring them to the Landels office and we will find them a good home.  Baby and adult clothes are also needed.

Clean and gently used clothes only, please.  Nothing with stains or permanent damage.   We will donate these items to families in need in our community.  We will be collecting donations until Friday, November 7, 2025.  Thank you!

Short-term Independent Study

Short-term Independent Study is a contract that allows students to work independently when there are circumstances that make attending school difficult. Short-term Independent study can range from a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days per school year. Contracts are approved on a case-by-case basis, require a 2-week notice, and require students to be in good academic and attendance standing.

We understand that certain absences are sometimes unavoidable. It is important to do your best to have your child in school as much as possible. Whenever you can, try to avoid taking trips during the school year -- or make efforts to take trips during District holidays, calendar linked here. Our office staff can assist you with contract details: Ms. Ann Moorti at [email protected].
