Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

I hope you were able to enjoy the break. I saw lots of smiles as students and staff reconnected and shared experiences from their time off. Our Character Strong trait for the month of December is Empathy. Empathy is understanding and connecting to other people’s feelings. The holidays are a joyous time for many, but they can also be a stressful time. Here are some prompts to help build empathy this holiday season.

 Kindness-in-Action Prompts

  • “What is one small thing you can do today to make someone else feel cared for?”
  • “Who in our school might need extra kindness this week, and what could you do for them?”
  • “If you could give a gift that didn’t cost money, what would it be and who would you give it to?”
  • “What is one way you can include someone who seems alone or shy?”

 Listening & Understanding Prompts

  • “Tell about a time when someone really listened to you. How did it make you feel?”
  • “What is a question you can ask someone to learn more about their traditions?”
  • “How can you show you understand someone’s feelings even if you don’t agree with them?”

 Diverse Holiday Experiences Prompts

  • “What is one winter or holiday tradition you have? How might someone’s tradition be different?”
  • “Why is it important to learn about how different people celebrate?”
  • “How can we make sure everyone feels seen and welcomed during this season?”

 Self-Reflection Prompts

  • “What feelings do you have during the holidays? How might someone else feel differently?”
  • “What helps you feel calm when things get busy? How could you help someone else feel calm?”
  • “What is something you’re grateful for that others might not have?”

Perspective-Taking Prompts

  • “What is something that might be hard for someone during the holidays?”
  • “Imagine a classmate is feeling left out during a celebration. What could you do to help?”
  • “How might someone feel if their family celebrates different holidays than most people around them?”
  • “Think of someone who might not be excited about the holidays—why might that be?”

Thank you!

Date and Time: Tuesday, December 9, 2025  Registration Link: https://tinyurl.com/MVWSD-25

The world is a big place, and it seems like current events have never been more complicated. Luckily, our friends at Project Cornerstone are back to share strategies and tips for fostering age-appropriate conversations, explaining the news to kids while protecting their mental health, and enhancing youths’ critical thinking through news literacy. By the end of this session, you’ll have added confidence that you’re able to help your children understand our complex world a little bit better.

To submit questions prior to the event, go to mvw.sd/questions. We will do our best to address your question during the session.
