Landels News
Dear Landels Families,
I hope to see you at the Multicultural Festival tonight! Come see the fabulous cultural displays and get a taste of flavors from around the world!
Events like the Multicultural Festival and Hispanic Heritage Month help students to develop an appreciation of diverse cultural backgrounds. They also provide opportunities for students to develop a positive self-identity. Below is an article from Project Cornerstone’s Asset of the Month program that provides some discussion topics you can utilize with your child.
The Importance of Positive Cultural Identity
It is important for youth to feel that they belong. Positive identity brings self-assurance, a sense of belonging, a positive view of personal future, and better success in school. Developing a positive cultural identity—a critical element of personal identity—can be difficult for young people, especially when they may be bridging more than one culture.
The way that youth are treated in regard to their ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or gender directly affects their ability to develop a positive personal identity. As adults, it’s critical that we model recognition, understanding, and celebrating all cultural identities, including the cultures to which we and/or our children do not belong.
Sharing and celebrating different cultural identities increases self-esteem and promotes cultural competence among all young people. The diversity of Silicon Valley is a benefit to our youth as they are exposed to many different cultures.
The following discussion topics* can help families talk about their cultural identity:
- What is our cultural background?
- What are some things that you value about our culture?
- What are some things about our culture that you would like other people to know?
- Do you know anyone who’s from a different culture? In what ways are your cultures similar and different? Do your cultural differences make it difficult to be friends? How can you share your cultural differences in a positive, nonjudgmental way?
*Adapted from the Canadian Child Care Federation’s “Supporting Our Children’s Social Well-Being… It’s a Team Effort!” workshop. This article was provided courtesy of Project Cornerstone’s Asset-a-Month program. For more information, visit www.projectcornerstone.org.

Vision and Hearing Screenings
MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in TK/kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place:
· At Landels on Sept. 24 and 26.
Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided by their physician.
If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing, please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3500 ext. 1050.
Short-term Independent Study
Short-term Independent Study is a contract that allows students to work independently when there are circumstances that make attending school difficult. Short-term Independent study can range from a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days per school year. Contracts are approved on a case-by-case basis, require a 2-week notice, and require students to be in good academic and attendance standing.
We understand that certain absences are sometimes unavoidable. It is important to do your best to have your child in school as much as possible. Whenever you can, try to avoid taking trips during the school year -- or make efforts to take trips during District holidays, calendar linked here. Our office staff can assist you with contract details: Ms. Ann Moorti at [email protected].
Check the Lost & Found
Our Lost & Found rack by room 6 is overflowing with jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, and more! If your child is missing something, please stop by and take a look.

Is your Student Too Sick for School?
As we enter the cold and flu season, it’s important to know when your student should stay home to rest and recover, as well as to prevent the spread of illness. Please take a moment to read the attached MVWSD’s Back to School Health Guidance flyer. It includes information on when your student should stay home, illness prevention tips and COVID guidelines. Knowing when to keep your student home helps keep our school community healthy and safe. Thank you for your cooperation!
Parenting in the Digital Era: Building Healthy Tech Habits
Date and Time: September 30, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Registration: http://mvw.sd/pu093025r
Did you know that experts estimate that the average American teen spends 7-8 hours each day on their screens? It’s no wonder that this is a critical parenting topic. Fear not: our friends at My Digital TAT2 are returning to Parent University! At this Speaker Series event, MDT2 will update us on the latest tech trends and discuss the key topics of media literacy, misinformation/ disinformation, and social media influencers. They will also address the burning question: “When is it ok to give my kid a cell phone?” You will be equipped with fresh knowledge and useful strategies to help your family maintain a healthy relationship with tech...and with one another.
To submit questions prior to the event, go to mvw.sd/questions. We will do our best to address your questions during the session.
Showing Up Matters….for learning, for friendships, for success
Is your student chronically absent? Students who are “chronically absent” typically attend school fairly regularly, but miss a few days here and there. Both excused or unexcused absences count toward chronic absenteeism. This loss of time in school negatively affects the student’s learning.
Chronically absent students miss 10% of the time that school has been in session. An average of 2 days absent a month means a student is chronically absent.
The District is required to track this data and report it to the state. MVWSD contacts parents when students reach concerning absence levels, but if not remedied, the students and their families may be referred to the District’s Student Attendance Review Board. Please contact your school counselor, At Risk Intervention Supervisor or School Community Engagement Facilitator if you need support with your child’s attendance.

MVEF funds essential programs – Back-to-School is the perfect time to give!
Imagine school without art or music, without hands-on science in the garden, without middle school sports or clubs, and with larger English classes…
MVEF donors make so much more possible. Extra English teachers in middle school keep class sizes manageable, CSMA art and music teachers spark creativity in elementary classrooms, and Living Classroom lessons bring science to life. And middle schoolers can discover sports, clubs, and performing arts—all because of MVEF funding.
Now is the time to become a donor—or renew your gift for this school year. The suggested donation for 2025–26 is $1,100 per student, but every amount makes a difference for our students.. All gifts are tax-deductible, and many employers will match your donation to double that impact. Click here to give!
