Message from our principal:

Hello Landels Families!

Every four years on January 20, the United States of America holds an inauguration ceremony for the incoming president and vice president of our country. Today will mark the first time that we will swear in a female, Black, and South Asian vice president in our nation’s history.  While each presidential and vice presidential inauguration is a historical occasion, it's important to recognize and celebrate what it means for millions of young people to see a person who looks like them in one of our nation’s most powerful positions. Please take a moment today to talk with your child about the historical significance of today.

We have a vacancy on our School Site Council.  This is a chance for you to be part of the decision-making team of parents and staff regarding programs, funding and goals.  Please email me if you would like to join.  The commitment is once a month for one hour.  Our next meeting will be January 25th, Monday, at 4:00 p.m.

You are invited to a Zoom meeting.

When: Jan 25, 2021 04:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)

Register in advance for this meeting:

Message from our Pride Team

Hello Landels Lions! In honor of our recently inaugurated president, the pride team has decided to do a spirit week- or in this case a patriot week. We will have a week full of fun things to celebrate our country. We hope you enjoy it!

Sincerely, The Pride Team

Perimeter Fencing Update

Thank you for your interest in the proposed school perimeter fencing project. Last week's community meeting was one of several input points for staff members, school parents and residents to view the plans and offer feedback.

Here is the link where you can view the results of the online exchange of ideas at the meeting. These are the major themes that arose from community members:

· Requested MVWSD ensure students and staff can exit school grounds in an emergency. (Insides of gates will have pushbar hardware for easy exit)

· Expressed concerns about access to the back of campus. (Gates will open 20 minutes before school starts for students. Volunteers and guests may exit through the back, but will be required to enter during school hours through the front office gate, for safety.)

· Requested that school fields be available for community access during non-school hours. (Neighbors will be able to access school fields from 4 pm til 7:30 am.)

As a result of resident feedback and in compliance with state and educational law, these are the District’s recent revisions to the current plan:

· Added more gates for increased access points for pedestrians after school hours.

· Eliminated the planned chain link fence adjacent to the neighbors’ wooden fence near the field.

· Added signage with specific hours of use and contact information for afterhours issues with gates. (Neighbors can access school fields from 4 pm til 7:30 am. Gates will unlock 20 min prior to school start time for students.)

· Ensured teachers and staff members have access at any time.

The next step for the project is that District staff will present the revised plans to the Board of Trustees at an upcoming meeting. After that meeting, we’ll work with our contractor to set a construction start date.

This additional dialogue is helping us to design fencing that both increases safety for students and staff while minimizing inconvenience for our neighbors.

Better Together: Poverty in America Awareness

January is Poverty in America Awareness Month and in the time of Covid-19 and the economic fallout, talking about issues surrounding poverty has never been more important. Words matter and our students know more than we often give them credit for. Talking about poverty with kids is not only possible, it's important. Explore the resources provided in this infographic (attached or viewable at https://www.mvwsd.org/bettertogetherMVWSD) to find an approach to talking about poverty that is most appropriate for your student(s). Ultimately, your conversations should reinforce that when it comes to making a difference in the world and caring for others in our community, we are #BetterTogether.

English Learner Families: ELPAC is (mostly) remote this Spring
