Hello Landels Families!

Assessment and Report Cards

It's hard to believe that we are just three weeks away from the end of the first trimester! Your child will be taking the district trimester tests for their grade level in these next weeks. Please talk with him/her about giving their best effort! You will be receiving their report card in November. These results, along with several other measures of your child's success, are used to determine report card grades.

Halloween Parade

Please join us on Thursday, October 31 at 8:15am for our Halloween Parade.  Students will wear their costumes to school.   Please keep in mind that costumes should be appropriate for school.  This means no masks, weapons, or gore.  If your student doesn't celebrate Halloween, we will provide an alternative activity. Please contact the office if you have any questions.

Site Plan Information

Our school site council met this week and discussed our site plan goals.  At the end of the meeting, our current site plan was approved by our five council members.  Thanks to all who participated and provided input.

As stated in my previous newsletter, we accomplished all but one of our site goals from last year.  Therefore, I would like to highlight our goals from last and this year in each of the subsequent weekly newsletters to come.

I’d like to start with the following goal:

Site Plan Goal Information:  Inclusive and Supportive Culture

Landels includes teachers, students and families who are working hard every day to make each other feel included and supported.  The following are some key strategies we incorporate at Landels to facilitate this feeling:

  • We hold Monday morning assemblies, recognize students using Landels ROARS, and hold an expectation assembly per grade level every trimester
  • Our SCEF and principal proactively check in with students for both social/emotional and academic struggles and track data
  • We develop a school wide sense of community, positive climate, and inclusivity using Toolbox curriculum including the 12 tools everyone needs to practice and use on a daily basis

Living Classroom

Living Classroom lessons kicked off this month and students took to the garden! Kindergarteners explore the garden and learn how to become stewards of their environment, first grade students learn about the parts of a plant and plant seedlings, second graders will plant winter wheat to be harvested in the spring. According to Cornell University Research, “A primarily qualitative study presented in Australia showed that “school-based community gardens represent a significant opportunity to embed nutrition, physical activity and environmental sustainability into mainstream curricula.” Living Classroom provides fundamental opportunities for your child to learn standards-based curriculum while also developing a love of their environment! Learn more about our programs by visiting our website at living-classroom.org.

Graham MUR

A team of professionals from Palo Alto University will present foundational information about mental health and mental illness and how mental health challenges may look different in different people or cultures. The training also discusses what to do when someone needs support or help.

Spanish interpretation and child care will be provided. Seating is limited and RSVPs are required for this event. Please click here to reserve your seat.

Attendance

Did you know that your children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of school days? That works out to just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it. So get your children off to a good start.  For more information, click here.

Important Walkathon and Silent Auction Information. There are changes. PLEASE READ.

By the time you read this, the Walkathon and Silent Auction is less than 1 week away. We have made some changes since we sent home the packets, so please please read this and share it with any other Landels parents you can.

The Walkathon and Silent Auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It helps to fund field trips, assemblies, after-school events, and curriculum support for our teachers. We have other things we'd love to fund, including expanded lunch time activities, and more support for our wonderful teachers. Please consider helping us out!

T-shirts will be used for Lap Counters This Year

This is a change! We will be marking laps on the back of the Walkathon shirts this year.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS. Especially for morning setup. Updated form!

Please take a look at the updated volunteer form here: http://bit.ly/LandelsWalkathon2019Volunteer. There have been some changes, which unfortunately means that some people who had signed up previously have had some slight changes to what they committed to (we've changed from 30 minutes slots to hour slots). If you have previously signed up, thank you and please check the form again

If you have not signed up, please consider seeing if you can come help - if you can take the early morning off of work, we always need some help in the morning. If you have older kids or friends who may be available to help in the afternoon, please ask them to help us!

Help your kids collect Pledges!

If you have not yet signed up at landels.walkstarter.com/my (click Login), please consider doing so. It's an easy way to create a page that you can send out to ask your friends and relatives to support us. Your child will also get to create an avatar that we will be posting up around the school (you can see many of them already up just outside of the office!).

Silent Auction

The Silent Auction will coincide with the Walkathon on Friday. While the students are walking, you will find the silent auction items displayed on tables on the blacktop. A reminder that bidding is ONLINE ONLY this year. All items are now displayed on our auction site (http://www.32auctions.com/Landels2019). You may preview the auction items now and you can start bidding at 3pm on Friday October 18th and can continue bidding until the auction ends on Monday October 21st at 3pm. This means that you will have the opportunity to bid for auction items remotely from your computer or mobile phone whether you are doing laps with your kids, stuck at work, out of town, or just don't get around to it until the weekend.

In the Silent Auction, you’ll find a wide assortment of items including books, passes for camps and activities, tickets to performances and attractions, gift cards for local restaurants and merchants, and unique Landels experiences for kids, adults, and the whole family. You are sure to find something useful and inspiring. Browse and bid! All proceeds go to the Landels PTA to support our teachers and students.
