Assessment and Report Cards
The end of the first trimester is tomorrow, Friday, November 1st! We will have a minimum day and we will be working diligently looking at data and working on report cards. You will be receiving their report card November 15th.
In addition to these district assessments, the next iReady math and reading diagnostic assessment will be given in the month of December. These data results, along with several other measures of your child's success, are used to guide our instruction and meet the needs of each child.
Site Plan
As you know, our site plan includes goals for both math and ELA. Therefore, in line with this, Landels will be hosting a Parent U at Crittenden Middle School next week on Wednesday, November 6 at 6:30 p.m. Our instructional coach, Karen Gordon, and I will be presenting a plethora of strategies that you can use to improve your child’s reading skills and math literacy. Our main office will be housing all of our home-school connection activities for you to complete at home, if you’d like! The activities are great for social-emotional learning and can be done as a family or one on one. They will be located on the wall as you walk in to the right. Look for this information in the next couple of weeks.
In November, Landels will be hosting a parent night with your children to talk about the Toolbox Tools, what they mean and how to use them. Look for a date in an upcoming newsletter!

Preschool Openings - Spaces available in MVWSD's preschool program

Registrations are being accepted for fee-based, full-day spaces located at Preschool at Theuerkauf for children who will be at least 3 years old by December 2. The full-day session is Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Want to learn more about programs funded by the Mountain View Educational Foundation to enrich your child's education at Landels? Ania Mitros is a Landels mom and MVEF board member. If you would like to learn more about MVEF or help out at the upcoming MVEF phonathon, please contact Ania at [email protected] or 206-619-1500, or attend an MVEF general meeting. Donations from parents like you support CSMA art and music class instructors, Living Classroom lessons, and environmental science field trips for every 4th and 5th grader at Landels. Regular school attendance is required by the state law, and is included in the District’s Local Control Accountability plan (LCAP) and Dashboard. State law requires MVWSD to send a letter to parents after three unexcused absences and/ or tardies over 30 minutes. Letters also inform parents of next steps and any resources or procedures in place to help their family get their child to school regularly. The state, county, and district are monitoring attendance, both excused and unexcused absences because the goal is for students to be in school as often as possible. Shrek the Musical Jr. at Crittenden Middle School (ticket order form attached)
Nasty will be nice and Mountain View will be ogre-the-moon when Crittenden students present their production of Shrek The Musical JR. on November 14-16 at 7:00pm and at 2:00pm on November 17th.
This family-friendly musical comedy follows the adventures of Shrek, an ogre who sets off on a quest to save a princess from a dragon. However, it turns out that in order to ultimately succeed, Shrek must battle an even bigger obstacle: learning how to believe in himself and open his heart to others.

Crittenden Music Fundraiser
The Crittenden Middle School music program is hosting a mattress sale fundraiser on Sunday, November 10th from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. in the Crittenden M.U.R. The mattress company will be bringing a variety of quality name brand mattresses of all sizes to the M.U.R that day. There will be 30 different mattress displays to try out. The company can take your mattress order, provide mattress delivery and then haul away your old mattress. Some mattresses will be on sale for up to 50% off regular retail price. The goal is to raise $5,000 for the students attending the annual Music Department Los Angeles trip.

School meetings coming up. Open Enrollment for new MVWSD students starts Jan. 13
For NEW students: Open Enrollment is from January 13-February 7 online. You can register your child for the 2020-21 school year when online registration opens on January 13 here: www.mvwsd.org/register
For CURRENT students in transitional kindergarten-7th grade: Parents will be asked by email to confirm enrollment in January 13 - February 7.
District new student information night, covering the registration process, is on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. (Spanish) and 7 p.m. (English) at Castro Elementary School, 500 Toft St.

If your child turns 5 years old between September 2 – December 2 of the current school year, he/she may qualify for transitional kindergarten. TK info night is December 5 at 5:00 PM at Theuerkauf Elementary.

The Vaping Crisis: What Is It Doing to Our Kids?

Join us as Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University, discusses the harmful impacts vaping has on the minds and bodies of adolescents.
Dr. Halpern-Felsher will provide an overview of current tobacco/nicotine products, including vapes, Juuls and other pod-based systems, which are more commonly used among teens than combustible cigarettes. Drawing upon on-going research, Dr. Halpern-Felsher will address why adolescents are drawn to using these products, dispel common misperceptions held by both adults and teens, and share effective, evidence-based strategies that parents, caregivers, and teachers, can leverage to help prevent and reduce the use of these addictive products.
The talk will be followed by a panel of local administrators and a mental health professional.
