Principal’s Message:

Dear Landels Families,

I hope you all had a fun and adventurous spring break! We are in the final 7 weeks of school and have lots of exciting activities planned for students and their families, starting with science night!

Science Night Rescheduled

Due to the late delivery of the Kiwi Crates, we are not able to hold science night this Thursday 4/21. Instead, we will hold science night on Tuesday, April 26th from 6-7pm. We will have a Taco truck selling food starting at 5:15pm. If you did not sign up for science night but are interested in participating, please fill out this survey (parents that already submitted the survey do not need to resubmit). Students that participate will receive a balloon racer when they arrive. Hope to see you there!

For students participating in the after-school enrichment instead of coming to science night, this will occur on May 5th from 12:30pm-1:30pm. All students that had selected the after-school event will be included in the 5/5 group.

CAASPP Testing

Grades 3-5 will start CAASPP testing next week. Students will take the ELA test April 26-28, Math on May 3-5, and our 5th grade students will take the science test May 10-11. All students will test first thing in the morning (8:30am-10am). Please avoid scheduling appointments during these times.

Below are some tips you may find useful to help prepare your child for the CAASPP assessment:

· Explain to your child that it is important to do their best.

· Provide positive reinforcement and encourage your child each day.

· Keep the test in perspective. We want students to do their best, but please make sure they understand that it is only one test. Remind them that if they are doing their best, you are proud.

· Make sure your child gets an ample, normal amount of sleep the night before the test.

· Make sure they arrive on time each day.

· Have your child eat a healthy breakfast.

· Keep a positive attitude about testing around your child. Remind them that this is a time to show what they know.

Bike Safety

The city’s Safe Routes to School program is partnering with Landels to provide information for safely walking and rolling to school. All 1st-5th grade students will receive the information in their PE classes next week on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 26th and 27th). The following content will be covered:

1.     Mini Main Street Pedestrian Education. Mini Main Street is an interactive simulation that allows students to experience traffic situations in a safe and fun learning environment.

2.     Helmet Fitting Station. Students will learn how to properly fit their helmets and will also learn why helmets are important safety equipment. Please encourage your child to bring their helmet, even if they are not biking to school.

3.     Map Your Route to School. Students will review a map of their school community and help identify the best routes to get to and from school.

School Site Council (SSC)

We are beginning to recruit for next year’s School Site Council. Landels’ School Site Council is composed of five parents and five staff members.  The School Site Council helps develop goals and actions for Landels’ School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA or site plan in short). They must also approve the site plan before it goes to the board. If you are interested in running to be a member of our SSC, please complete this Self-Nomination Google Form. More information about SSC can be found here

Math Olympiad

Around 45k students have participated world-wide in this year's Math Olympiad competitions, and on our Landels team we had: 2 - Top 10%, 2 - Top 20%, 2 - Top 25%, 2 - Top 40%, and 1 - Top 50% placements. Congrats to the students that placed and a special thanks to Dejan, Anett and Ms. Son, our Math Olympiad team!

Thank you for your support!

Pieter Dolmans

Water Bottles

Please send your child to school with a water bottle daily.  Because of our COVID precautions, we do not allow students to drink directly from our water fountains. They can refill their water bottles, but we do not have extras to hand out. Please write your child’s name on the bottle so it can be returned if misplaced.

MVWSD News

Please share your thoughts: Safety ThoughtExchange beginning April 20

As our community is still reeling from the recent student tragedy, many of us are asking the question of “how can we make school commutes safer for our students?” The Mountain View Whisman School District is looking to focus and record these organic conversations in an online exchange of ideas, with the goal of involving all of the organizations and people who have a role in making our community safer.

On April 20, please look in your email for a link to a ThoughtExchange about safety. Middle school students will also be participating. Your participation is confidential. Please share and come back often to rate new ideas until the exchange closes on May 4.

MVWSD Celebrates Its Reclassified Students!

It's time for our annual celebration of former English Learner students who have successfully reclassified as English Proficient this school year! We are extremely proud of all the students as well as all of the families, teachers, and school staff who have supported them along the way. Families of newly reclassified students should have received email invitations and formal paper invitations this week to the event to take place at Crittenden the evening of April 28. If you have any questions, or believe you should have received an invitation but didn't, please contact your child's school or Leticia Corcoran at [email protected] or (650) 526-3500 x1121. Congratulations!

COVID masking

Both outdoor and indoor masking is strongly recommended (but no longer required) for students and staff in our schools and offices. However, there are times that masks are still very highly recommended.

April Better Together Infographic

This April, we herald in Autism Acceptance Month and celebrate our neurodiverse community. MVWSD is a district that aims to provide an identity-affirming, empowering space for all of our students. We strive to challenge biases and champion change that makes our world more equitable, accessible, and just. Check out this month's infographic for ideas and resources to spark a conversation about autism acceptance and about the gifts our neurodiverse people bring to our community. Health and Wellness Tip: Changing Your Thoughts

Everyone has upsetting thoughts from time to time, which can make us feel angry, sad, or frustrated. This is normal! It is often our emotions that drive these upsetting thoughts, not the facts of the situation. By catching our upsetting thoughts, checking the facts, and changing our thoughts based on those facts, we can start to have more helpful thoughts and improve our mood.

Watch this video and learn more about how to change upsetting thoughts to be more helpful.

To change your upsetting thoughts:

1.     Catch it. When you feel upset, pause and ask yourself, “What words or phrases are running through my mind right now?”

2.     Check it. Consider whether the thought you are having is helpful or not.

3.     Change it. If you are having an unhelpful thought, consider other ways of looking at the situation. Reframe your thought to one that is more helpful.

Catching, checking, and changing your thoughts takes practice. By noticing your unhelpful thoughts and reframing them based on facts, you can improve your mood.
