Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated teachers, inspiring students, and supportive families - thank you for making our school a place of learning, growth, and connection. It is an honor and privilege to lead this school and I am forever grateful for your trust in me. I hope you all have a wonderful break spent with loved ones.

Community Input on Additional Arts and Music Funds

California schools will now get additional funding for arts and music each year. Our school will soon have an additional annual budget to spend on arts and music programs in addition to what we already offer. We need your ideas!

1. Please click here for a brief survey about potential future arts programming. (The students and staff will be given similar surveys at school). This survey will be open until December 15.

2. Come and hear more about Prop 28 and give input on this topic at these upcoming meetings:

Principal’s Coffee/ELAC, December 11th @ 8:30am

SSC Meeting, December 16th @ 3pm

You will also be able to provide input on the district’s outdoor learning initiative at the same meetings.

United Against Hate Week

We are at the tail-end of United Against Hate Week. You can ask your child what they did this week to show kindness and continue to challenge them to see situations from different perspectives. I received lots of heartwarming notes from students, which filled my bucket.

Thank you!

Pieter Dolmans

Attendance

As we near the Holiday breaks, I want to remind families of the importance of students being at school every day. Chronic absenteeism has a lasting impact on a student’s academic, social and emotional development. We know there are many reasons students may need to miss school, but we ask that you plan your vacations so that you do not need to miss school. Thank you for prioritizing your child’s attendance.

i-Ready Diagnostic 2 Assessments

Students will take the i-Ready Math and Reading Diagnostic 2 during the week of December  2 - Dec 6. i-Ready is an online program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth in mathematics and reading.

Families, Below are some tips you may find useful to help prepare your child for the diagnostic assessment:

· Explain to your child that it is important to do his/her best.

· Remind your children to work out their problems and pace themselves

· Make sure that your child is well-rested and has breakfast the day of the assessment.

· Please make sure to encourage your child.

o   This is a diagnostic test that covers information that may be beyond their current level. Please reassure them that they should try their best even through difficult questions.

Lost & Found

Is your child missing a sweater/jacket, lunch box, water bottle or umbrella? Our lost and found cart is overflowing with many items. Please take a moment after school or on the weekend to check out the lost & found cart located beside Room 6. Any leftover items will be donated 12.20.24.

Short-Term Independent Studies

If you are planning on scheduling family vacations, please make every effort to schedule aroundour instructional calendar. You can also find minimum days outside our regularly scheduled early release Thursdays for scheduling appointments for your scholar. If your plans include your child missing 3-15 days of school, please notify the front office at least 14 days in advance to discuss a short-term independent studies contract to minimize the impact of missed school days.

Landels Valentine’s Dance Organizing Committee

Do you like to plan fun parties?

This year we are going to have a “family dance” in February. Students can come with a favorite adult to hang out, play games, meet with their friends, and boogie down on the dance floor!

If you want to be part of the planning, please email Anna at [email protected]. We want to hear your ideas! Time commitment can be as much or little as you like. We will begin planning in December.

Start practicing your talents!

We are bringing back the Landels Talent Show!

We know that it can take awhile for a student to decide on what they want to do for a talent show, buddy up with friends to make a group piece, and/or practice their skills so they are ready to perform.

So even though the talent show is not until March 14th, it isn’t too early to talk with your student about what they might want to do in the show.

Talents can be anything! We’ve had all kinds of acts from gymnastics to cubing, martial arts to magic tricks. We’ve had theatrical monologues, musical instruments, and group dance choreographies. So feel free to get creative with your student and help them think through how they would like to shine onstage.

If you would like to be part of the Talent Show steering committee, please email Anna at [email protected]. We will begin planning in February.
