Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

Please use your free COVID test after Thanksgiving break

MVWSD is providing at-home COVID-19 testing kits for free to families and staff members so that you may test before returning to campus after the Thanksgiving break. A box containing one test will be sent home with each student today (Friday for 5th grade) so that you can test on the weekend of Nov. 26-27 before returning to school on Monday, Nov. 28.  Please see this letter for what to do after testing. Thank you for participating in this safety measure to help ensure all of our students and staff stay healthy.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher (Student) Conferences present a valuable opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, strengths and needs, and work with your teacher to help your child have a successful academic experience. Conference week is scheduled for December 5th-9th, 2022. Every day that week is a minimum day for students (dismissal at 12:10pm). Parents can choose to attend conferences virtually or in person.

These past months, your child’s teacher has had the opportunity to get to know your child academically as well as socially-emotionally. Your child’s teacher has multiple data points available to better understand areas of strength and areas of need. In order to help parents make the most of their conference time, Landels is offering a Parent U Extension on effective parent-teacher communication. Please join us on December 1st @ 7pm (register here) to take a closer look at some of the data you’ll see during conferences and give examples of questions you might want to ask.

Prior to conferences, parents can access their child’s iReady Diagnostic 2 reports on the PowerSchool Parent Portal starting December 2nd. Steps for accessing PowerSchool Parent Portal i-Ready Reports are here

Your child’s teacher will be sending you information detailing the process for conference sign-ups through Calendly. Please contact the front office if you have any trouble accessing iReady reports or if you have any questions about conferences.

Dear Landels families,

The holidays are almost here, a time to spend with family and friends, to eat a nice dinner or two, to celebrate in different ways.  But for some of our families in need, this is a difficult and stressful time. We are asking for donations of gift cards (Target, Walmart) to provide to some of our families. Please consider buying a gift card and dropping it off in the Landels office. We really appreciate our wonderful and generous community! We’ll be collecting gift cards until Wednesday, December 21.

Is your child missing a sweater/jacket, lunch box, water bottle or umbrella? Our lostandfound cart is overflowing with many items. Please take a moment after school or on the weekend to check out the lost & found cart located beside Room 6.  All items not claimed by Friday, November 18 will be donated.

Health and Wellness Tip: Improving Mood

Stressful events influence our thoughts (words or images that pop into our mind), feelings (our emotions), and actions (what we do or say). For example, if your childcare falls through, then you might think, “My day is ruined;” you might feel frustrated; and you might act short-tempered with your child, partner, or colleagues. Doing enjoyable activities can prevent stressful events from ruining our day.

Watch this video to learn more about how doing fun activities can make you (or your child) feel better.

To improve your (or your child’s) mood:

1.     Track your mood throughout the day (e.g., rate how you feel each morning, afternoon, and evening from 1 = unhappy to 5 = happy).

2.     Create a list of activities that you enjoy doing (e.g., painting, exercising, talking to a friend).

3.     Plan when you can do one or more of your activities (e.g., scheduling a phone call with a friend for Saturday morning).

4.     Do your scheduled activity.

5.     Reflect on how you feel after doing your activity (e.g., compare your mood rating before and after your activity).

These tips came directly from the free, online toolkit from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
