Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

October is Safety Month in MVWSD. Don’t forget that the districtwide earthquake drill is tomorrow. We have reviewed our procedures, and we are ready to practice. Parents, since students will be outside for approximately one hour, please plan to apply sunscreen to your child in the morning and have them bring water and a hat if they are sun-sensitive.

Please reassure your child that drills are our way of practicing for an emergency.  These things may never happen, but if they do, we’re better protected and are more able to help ourselves and others.

After the earthquake drill, teachers will also review what to do in the event of a dangerous intruder or similar event on campus. Practice at the elementary schools means students will view an age-appropriate “dangerous intruder” video (which you may preview here) and talk with their teacher on how to stay calm, follow directions, and listen to trusted adults in the event of an emergency.

Halloween

We will have an optional Halloween costume parade on October 31st at 8:20am (weather permitting). Students who would like to participate may come to school dressed in their costume. The students will parade on the blacktop. If you would like to watch the parade, you will need to sign in at the front office and present your ID. In order to avoid a huge crowd, please sign in and present your ID the day before so we can pre-print visitor passes. Guests are asked to observe the parade from the designated area on the map. We will have an alternative space for any students that do not wish to participate.

Costumes

We encourage students to be creative with their costumes and have fun with the spirit of the holiday. All regular Landels dress code policies apply - please ensure costumes are appropriate and follow the guidelines below:

· Only masks to prevent the transmission of COVID are allowed.

· Violence – no pretend “prop” weapons such as guns, knives, or swords. We would like to promote costumes that align with our values of being kind and inclusive.

· Appropriateness – costumes cannot promote violence or be offensive or inappropriate in any way.

Students who wear costumes that do not conform to the costume guidelines listed above will not be allowed to participate.

Thank you!

Pieter Dolmans

Drafts available: Single Plans for Student Achievement

Each year, our schools create Single Plans for Student Achievement (SPSAs or “site plans”) that guide the work for the coming year. These plans help us prioritize programs and strategies that will best serve our students. In the fall, elected parent representatives from School Site Councils and English Language Advisory Committees work with principals and school staff members to create a draft that is reviewed and approved by the MVWSD Board of Trustees.  Parents and staff members may give feedback through Oct. 26 to their principal and elected parent representatives to SSC and ELAC. You may review the draft plans here.
