Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

Winter viruses are on the rise. As the weather gets colder and we spend more time indoors, we need to keep up our guard against germs. As a reminder, our District requires masking for everyone at large indoor events, such as our upcoming Holiday Fair.

These simple steps will help prevent severe illness and hospitalization from the flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Five tips to help prevent winter viruses:

·       Get vaccinated, boosted and treated

·       Stay home if you are sick and test for COVID

·       Wear a mask in indoor public spaces to reduce spread

·       Wash your hands

·       Cover your cough or sneeze

Additionally, MVWSD is sending home free COVID tests for every student and staff member before winter break so that you can test before returning to school in January. Please see the details below and stay well!

Please use your free COVID test after winter break

MVWSD is providing at-home COVID-19 testing kits for free to families and staff members so that you may test before returning to campus after the winter break. A box containing two tests will be sent home with each student this week so that you can test on Monday, Jan. 9 before students return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 10 and then again on Sunday, Jan. 15 before returning to school on Monday, Jan. 16.  Please see this letter for what to do after testing. Thank you for participating in this safety measure to help ensure all of our students and staff stay healthy.

Thank you!

Pieter Dolmans

Coat Drive

One of our former Landels students is organizing a coat drive to help Ukrainian families. We will be collecting coats until Jan 15th.

Thank you Landels families!

Our generous, caring and supportive community never ceases to amaze us! Thank you to everyone who donated gift cards for our families who need a little help during the holidays. I wish you a wonderful holiday season and I hope you have the opportunity to spend time with your families and friends. Have a restful and safe break. See you back on January 10! – Ms. Bea (SCEF)

Open Enrollment for 2023-24 starts in January

In January, the Mountain View Whisman School District will be opening student enrollment for next fall.

For CURRENT students in transitional kindergarten-7th grade: Parents will be asked by email to confirm enrollment from January 24 to February 10.

For families enrolling NEW students: Please check www.mvwsd.org/register for details about virtual school information meetings held in January, how to locate your neighborhood school, how to explore school options and the four steps to register during the enrollment period held January 24 to February 10.

Better Together: Exploring Differences

For the month of December, we explore how our experiences are similar to and different from those of people from different backgrounds. We will also explore Disability Awareness while building literacy around this important topic. The resources linked through the digital copy of this infographic (attached) help you and your students explore themselves and others respectfully and meaningfully with activities meant to enlarge our perspectives about people with disabilities. Please see https://www.mvwsd.org/bettertogethermvwsd.

The View Teen Center: December

The View Teen Center is a free facility in Mountain View (263 Escuela Ave) for all Mountain View and Los Altos 6th - 12th grade students. The center is open Monday through Friday: 3:30 - 7 p.m. and Saturday: 1 - 6 p.m, and features a game room, makerspace, kitchen, computer/study room, outdoor area, and much more! See attached flyer for details about upcoming December events and programs or visit their webpage for more information.

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Instructions

We give our kids dozens of instructions each day: Get ready for school. Wash your hands before you eat. Do your homework. Sometimes our kids follow our instructions, and sometimes they do not. One way to increase follow through is to give effective instructions. For example, making eye contact with your child and gently telling them to turn off the TV is likely to be more effective than yelling at them from another room.

To provide effective instructions:

Think about a few things that you would like your child to do and try using these tips to provide effective instructions.

Instead of saying…                                      Say….

“Don’t bother me.”                                           “Please work on your homework.”

“TURN OFF THE TV!!”                                   “Please turn off the TV.”

“I told you to stop playing video games.”       “If you don’t stop playing video games in the next 5

minutes, then you won’t be able to play tomorrow.”

These tips came directly from the free, online Everyday Parenting program created by parenting expert, Dr. Kazdin.

Holiday Fair

We are so excited for the Holiday Fair Friday in the MUR from 4:30-6:30. It'll be great to see everybody out and spreading holiday cheer, but remember to come and go with your hands full!  Here are some hints for you to have the best time ever:

1. Admission is free but bring cash as many of our vendors will not be set up to take credit cards.

2. Come hungry and ready shop! We've got desserts, jewelry, crafts, gifts and more!  Food ranges from Korean Japchae to pizza to French crepes and vegetarian fried rice.  Be prepared to eat and drink outside! This event is primarily indoors and masking will be required.

3. Participate in our Food Drive at the event or by bringing items to our drop box in the main office any time this week. All donations will go to CSA Food Pantry for immediate distribution to our community. See flyer attached for preferences (Oatmeal, Cereal, Tea, etc)!

4. Winter Reading Challenge is starting soon, so freshen up your home-library by visiting our Book Exchange table.  Bringing books is not required, but welcomed.

Also, we're still looking for volunteers to help out during the event. Please email [email protected] if you can join us even for part of it.

Reading Challenge

The Landels Winter Reading Challenge is a go and the class with most days read will win a special holiday party! Keep an eye on your student's backpack for the form to help them keep track of each day they read for at least 20 minutes over winter break. Each day counts towards the class total. (An e-version of the form is attached if you want to print your own.)

Holiday Giving and Employer Matching Gifts

We are grateful to have an incredible and generous community at Landels.  With your contributions we are able to provide technology, assemblies, field trips, playground equipment, and so much more. While we welcome contributions at any time, please consider using employer matching to help your donation go further!

If you have already donated through Totem, our online store or via cash or check rather than going through your employer's giving portal, you can simply make a match request on your company's giving portal. You will need a copy of your donation receipt as well as our name (Landels PTA) and our tax ID (94-264-1692).

If you and your spouse both work for companies that have employer matching, you can request matching from both companies!

AmazonSmile

A reminder from Landels PTA --  when you shop through smile.amazon.com, Amazon will donate 0.5% of eligible purchases to the Landels PTA—no fees for us, no extra cost to you.

1. Simply set it up on your browser and/or on your phone’s Amazon App and select Landels Elementary PTA as your AmazonSmile charity.

2. Activate AmazonSmile on your browser AND on your phone app if you shop using both.

3.You need to renew your charity choice twice a year.
