Landels News

Hello Landels Families,

Approximately 30% of all California students are chronically absent. One of our goals at Landels is to increase daily attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism has a lasting impact on a student’s academic, social and emotional development. We have lots of great things happening at Landels and many strategies to address the impact of the pandemic on student learning, including small group reading instruction, RTI, tutoring support, and strong, differentiated instruction with a focus on priority standards. But, students need to be present in order to take advantage of these services and resources. Thank you for prioritizing your child’s attendance.

Walk Audit

On Wednesday, February 8th, the City of Mountain View will be conducting a walk audit at Landels to evaluate the area for walkability, comfort, and access. The walk audit will take about 1.5 hours and will be conducted by City staff, Safe Routes to School consultants, school staff and parents. This group will document travel pain points, evaluate street infrastructures, and observe the walking environment around the school.

Please complete this sign-up form if you are interested in joining the walk audit and helping to improve transportation safety near school.

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Belly Breathing

Our mood is influenced by physical sensations in our body. When we feel stressed, we tend to take quick and shallow breaths. By taking slow and deep breaths, we can signal our body to relax.

Watch this video to learn more about how belly breathing can help your child (or you) feel more relaxed.

To belly breathe:

1.     Choose a comfortable position, such as sitting on a chair or laying on your back.

2.     Place one hand on your belly.

3.     Take a deep breath in through your nose while you count to four. As you breathe in, your belly should rise.

4.     Hold your breath while you count to five.

5.     Breathe out through your mouth while you count to six. As you breathe out, your belly should flatten.

You may need to repeat these steps for 5-10 minutes before you start to feel relaxed. By practicing these steps, you can learn to relax after stressful situations.
