Message from our principal:
Hello Landels Families!
This week starts the third trimester of school. Although we have had many challenges, we have come out the other side much stronger and more capable in many ways. Over February break, I started writing in a gratitude journal daily. I did this to remind myself of the positives of the past year and to highlight how much I take for granted at times. I am grateful for my health and the health of my family and friends. I am grateful to work in the Landels community with supportive families and neighbors. I encourage you to do the same as a whole family and share your thoughts with each other. To make this a common practice brings positivity, hope and empathy to the household, community, and world. I am looking forward to another trimester with you and watching your children grow academically and emotionally.
Report cards will be emailed to families next Friday, please be on the lookout for them and reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
Learning Options Survey due Feb 28: We’ll need to collect updated information on your preferences for your students’ learning options for the rest of the school year. You will still have the option to keep your children at home in distance learning, or you may tell us you’d like them to return to campus when schools reopen.
We wanted you to have ample time to review it, which is why you received it before February break. Please answer the survey with as much certainty as possible, and if you have questions, please reach out via email or give us a call. We will be holding a principal’s coffee this Friday, February 26th, at 8:30 a.m. to answer any of your questions to the best of our ability. This is a very personal and important decision to make and we want to support you with it.

Upcoming Parenting Workshop
Drs. Eduardo Bunge and Alayna Park at Palo Alto University would like to support students and parents at Landels Elementary School. Starting next month, they will be offering four biweekly synchronous classes on tools for improving your child’s behavior, increasing your child’s compliance with your requests, and strengthening your relationship with your child. They will also provide information on how you can access a free, online program with more techniques for making parents' typical day in the home easier. Here are some great TIPS to improve positive behavior at home:
Antecedents are things you can say or do that increase the chance the desired behavior occurs, such as:
· Using Clear and Specific prompts
o Say: “Please pick up five clothes on your floor and put them in the hamper.”
· Using a Playful Challenge to “set the stage”
o Say: “[LAUGH] I bet you can’t get to the dinner table to be ready to eat in under one minute. You would have to be a superhero to move that quickly!”
*Remember antecedents can help get the desired behavior to occur, but for the behavior to occur consistently, it is critical to praise the positive behavior right after it happens!
These tips came directly from the free, online Everyday Parenting program created by parenting expert, Dr. Kazdin.

Hello Landels Lions! Get out your pencils, pens, and paper- The Landels First Annual Art Exhibition is for all grades to participate in. You can make a drawing using whatever materials you like, and post it on our school Padlet. Feel free to use markers, crayons and colored pencils- whatever you have is perfect! There is no topic and it would be nice if you could include your name at the bottom of your amazing artwork. Be creative and have fun. We can’t wait to see your awesome work.
If art isn't your hobby, throughout the entire month of March the Pride Team has also decided to host The Landels First Annual Short Story Exhibition! Students in all grade levels will have the month of March to plan and write a story and post it on a special padlet to show off their work. This activity is optional but please participate if you are interested! We hope you enjoy it and let your creativity come to life!
Career Speaker Series starting on March 12
The Landels Career Speaker Series starts on Friday, March 12! We are so excited about this new program! Through a series of sessions in March and April, students will learn about various careers and occupations from in our very own community. Our speakers will share about what is involved in their job, things they enjoy about their job and any training and education that was necessary. They will also share their experiences, challenges and rewards.
Parents, if you are interested in being one of our speakers, please email Bea at [email protected] or sign up on Konstella. We’ll have 3-4 speakers every Friday starting at 5:30pm on March 12. Please email Bea with your name, your student’s name, your career and the date that you are available to present. (Friday 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9, 4/23). The students will love learning about your job! Thanks!
Black History Month
Even before children can talk, they are learning about the world and about race through the words and actions of others. Parents, teachers, and caregivers have the unique opportunity to frame their child's first attempts to understand and talk about race. Talking about race matters because (1) everyone has a racialized identity, (2) racialized identity significantly impacts a person's life, and (3) race is a defining social construct in America.
This Black History Month, use the Better Together infographic to begin racially-focused conversations with children acknowledging that conversations about race will look different for each family and classroom and there is no single way to talk to children about race. Have honest conversations with your students about the history of privilege and oppression as it relates to Black History and, where appropriate, connect this to local community and larger global issues.
Together, we can explore Black History. Together, we can become anti-racist.

Open House Cancelled
Due to COVID-19, our schools will not be holding Open House events this spring, as we traditionally do in April. This year is different since our students’ work has been done at home, and gathering in groups at school is not permitted. We certainly will miss seeing all of the amazing work from our students and teachers, and look forward to a time we can gather to celebrate students’ work.

While we are not able to gather in person, we hope you will join us for a lively evening of trivia, toasts to our teachers, and fundraising for our schools. Now more than ever, the programs funded by your donations to MVEF help to create a well-rounded education for our children that includes art, music, technology, and science exploration. A significant portion of MVEF funding this year is being directed to support distance learning. All funds raised from the Gala help us meet our goal of raising $800,000 this school year. Help us to support every child at every school in the Mountain View Whisman School District!

The SCCOE K-8 Virtual Career Fair is being held Thursday, March 11 from 1-3p.m. The event theme is Connecting Passions to Careers and will feature guest speakers from various fields and industries, who will encourage students to follow their passions and dream big.
