Dear Landels Families,
October is Safety Month in MVWSD. As you read in Dr. Rudolph’s letter, we want to be ready to act when dangerous situations arise. We have already practiced fire drills and soon will practice an earthquake drill and how to react to a dangerous intruder.
This week and next, our principals, teachers and staff members will be training on the Incident Command System (ICS) and general emergency procedures. The ICS assigns roles to school staff members so that even scary situations can have well-organized responses.
Earthquake drill: After training, we’ll practice what to do during the districtwide earthquake drill to be held on Oct. 19. Click here to view the video that shows how we approach safety and what an earthquake drill looks like.
We talk with students in age-appropriate ways about what they can expect and why we practice emergency responses. For elementary students we say the most important things to remember if an earthquake happens at school are duck, cover and hold if they feel the ground shake. When it stops, go outside to the field. Stay calm with kid voices off so we can follow adult instructions. In an emergency, we will keep them safe at school until their grown ups can pick them up.
Dangerous intruder: Our schools will review what to do in the event of a dangerous intruder or similar event on campus. The dates for each school’s practice will vary depending on scheduling.
Practice at the elementary schools means students will view an age-appropropriate “dangerous intruder” video (which you may preview here) and talk with their teacher. The video and classroom discussion will encourage children to stay calm, follow directions, and listen to trusted adults.

Unity Day is an annual event occurring during National Bullying Prevention Month that promotes joining together to create healthier communities through kindness, acceptance of difference, and inclusion. It was started by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center in 2011 and is now celebrated around the world.
Unity Day is a day when we can come together in one giant, ORANGE message of hope and support. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing support for students who have been bullied and for bullying prevention.
A few FAQ’s
Why unity?
For years, our culture justified bullying with expressions such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Some kids just deserve to be bullied,” or “Bullying is a rite of passage.” The goal of the day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.
What is the call to action?
The call to action is simple—wear and share the color orange—as a visible representation of the supportive, universal message that our society wants to prevent bullying, and is united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Why the color orange?
Unity Day is held during October, and orange is a color commonly identified with that month and season. It is also a color associated with safety and visibility. Orange is described as warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes a strong statement. It was also a color that was not being used by another widely known cause.
Student vision and hearing screenings coming up
Each fall, MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place at Landels on October 24 and 25.
Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.
If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3500 ext. 1050.
Winter Clothes Donations
It's finally time to get the warm clothes out of the closet! If you find items that are too small for your kids, or you just don't want them anymore, please bring them to the Landels office and we will find them a good home. Baby and adult clothes are also needed.
Clean and gently used clothes only, please. Nothing with stains or permanent damage. We will donate these items to families in need in our community. We will be collecting donations until Friday, November 3, 2023. Thank you!

Soda Making
Monday, Oct 9, 3:15-4:15 pm, Room 11 (1st grade, 20 students)
Come discover the secret formula for making soda! In this class kids will mix ingredients to create their own perfect soda recipe. Experiment, taste, and burp your way through the scientific process!
Ready, Set, Walkathon Training!
Tuesday, Oct 17, 3-4 pm, blacktop (grades K-2, 20 students)
Want to train and practice for the walkathon? The walkathon is around the corner and it’s time to get your mind and body ready to log as many laps as possible! We’ll challenge our endurance and stamina with games, obstacles, and relays.
Discuss the classes above with your student and have him/her sign up in the yellow binder in the office if interested. Sign ups start the morning after this Landels Latest goes out.

Walkathon Pledge Challenges are here!
Participation: If 50% of your student’s classroom gathers at least one pledge, your teacher will get to throw water balloons at Principal Dolmans.
Fundraising Heroes: At the walkathon, the top 10 pledge earners in the school will get to wrap Principal Dolmans up like a Zombie with toilet paper.

We will resend the email with the link to your fundraising page on Thursday 10/5, but if you haven’t received an email from 99pledges with a personalized fundraising page for your child, please let us know at [email protected].
Once you have your pledge page, you’ll have a personalized link to share with family and friends to ask for donations. Please share it widely and enthusiastically! If you’re not able to fundraise online, stop by the office to get your paper pledge form! Remember to turn it in with the collected pledges after the event.
Math Olympiad Club
Math Olympiad is back at Landels for 4th and 5th graders! This is an after school math club that parent volunteers host on Mondays 3-3:45 pm from Oct 23 to Mar 18. Students will prepare for and compete in monthly international math contests provided by MOEMS.org.
For more information, please have your child pick up a packet from the Math Olympiad basket in the Front Office. To participate, we ask that students submit an application with parental consent and a completed math contest by Oct 16.
Family Science Night: Fri, Oct 6, 5:30-7 pm
Thank you for your enthusiastic response! Due to limited capacity of 150 students, advance registration was required -- email [email protected] if you need to double check your registration or have any other questions.
This Family Science Night is an evening of interactive science in the MUR! Students will rotate through various Mad Science stations, including Dry Ice, Slime, Magnets, and Bouncy Balls. There will be something to take home from each station! Sponsored by the PTA.
A taco truck will be on site starting at 5pm. You may also bring your own dinner.
