Landels News

Dear Landels Families,

Thank you for your participation and engagement in Parent-Teacher Conferences this week! One question that we are often asked at conferences is how you can support your child at home. I am sure your child’s teacher has shared some resources with you, but here are some general suggestions:

Building Background Knowledge: When students have varied experiences, they can apply that knowledge to better understand books, math problems, etc. One way to build background knowledge is to expose your child to different experiences by visiting places. This is not always possible or practical. However, a relatively easy and accessible way to build background knowledge is to watch educational television or read informational books together.

Reading: Reading means reading the words, listening to the words, reading the pictures, or retelling a story. So even if a child is not yet reading on their own, they benefit greatly from listening to a story or looking through picture books. Our students check out library books from the Landels library every week. In addition, students have access to lots of books through their Clever account and apps like razkids or Epic.

Math Fluency: Math fluency means knowing your math facts (i.e. quickly knowing that 9x5 is 45), and also being able to decompose and compose numbers accurately (45 is 9 groups of 5, or 45 is 40 and 5 more).  A great way to build math fluency is through simple card and dice games. Here are some examples

Behavior: I believe parenting is the toughest job there is. My little ones definitely test my patience - I am often reflecting on how I can be a better parent and promote positive behaviors. The next time your child is misbehaving, talk about how their behavior is impacting you or others and brainstorm more productive ways to communicate needs. “It’s hard for me to hear/understand you when you yell and it also hurts my ears. I’m here to help - what is it you are needing?”

Although we only have formal parent teacher conferences once a year, teachers are always available to discuss your child’s progress.

Thank you!

Gift Cards

Dear Landels families,

The holidays are almost here, a time to spend with family and friends, to eat a nice dinner or two, to celebrate in different ways.  But for some of our families in need, this is a difficult and stressful time. We are asking for donations of gift cards (Costco, Gas, Target, Walmart) to provide to some of our families. Please consider buying a gift card and dropping it off in the Landels office. We really appreciate our wonderful and generous community! We’ll be collecting gift cards until Wednesday, December 21.

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Instructions

We give our kids dozens of instructions each day: Get ready for school. Wash your hands before you eat. Do your homework. Sometimes our kids follow our instructions, and sometimes they do not. One way to increase follow through is to give effective instructions. For example, making eye contact with your child and gently telling them to turn off the TV is likely to be more effective than yelling at them from another room.

To provide effective instructions:

Think about a few things that you would like your child to do and try using these tips to provide effective instructions.

Instead of saying…                                      Say….

“Don’t bother me.”                                           “Please work on your homework.”

“TURN OFF THE TV!!”                                   “Please turn off the TV.”

“I told you to stop playing video games.”       “If you don’t stop playing video games in the next 5

minutes, then you won’t be able to play tomorrow.”

These tips came directly from the free, online Everyday Parenting program created by parenting expert, Dr. Kazdin.

Walkathon Results

As you may have seen in our Konstella message, we have effectively hit our Walkathon goal for this year! You can see the number to continue to rise by visiting our pledge site: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/landelswalkathon2022.  While we aren't quite at 50K there, we did spend about $4000 less than we budgeted for decorations and other expenses and we anticipate additional money coming in from pledge matching and donations for the parent-led events.

The money raised here let's PTA continue to support our students, classrooms, teachers and community through funding of things like teacher supplies ($800/teacher), field trips ($11,000/year), and the Playworks on campus leadership program ($18,000).

Everyone at the PTA just wanted to say *Thank You* for everything to our volunteers, students and families that participated and helped make the walkathon a success!
